HandBrake Team
It is important to first understand that HandBrake does not have a company, legal entity, sponsors or corporation managing the project.
This is a volunteer project run by a few developers in our free time.
As such, we have no physical address or phone number available.
We are unable to provide commercial level legal agreements.
Information We Collect
- Information you enter into this website. For example, a name, email address and any information that you fill out on the Contact Us page.
- When you visit this website, we maintain access logs of each page that you visit. Thisincludes your internet address (IP) and possibly the operating system, browser version, and other information that may be in your browser's http headers.
HandBrake Application
- The HandBrake application has an built in update checker. This makes a standard https call to our website or a page hosted on github to check for the latest update information.
- When checking via our website, per bullet 2 under "Information We Collect", this will show up as a record in our access logs as if you visited the site in a web browser.
- When checking via Github, Github may store access logs and information about the request under their own Privacy Policy
- The HandBrake version information is included in the HTTP header.
- NO information is collected or transmitted from your computer regarding the application logs, error information and source or encoded content.
- This feature can be disabled in the application preferences if desired.
What the information is used for
- To allow us to offer, improve, maintain and monitor the security and quality of this website.
- To allow us to offer and maintain features such as the "Contact Us" page.
- To allow us to offer automatic update checks within the application.
Consent
- If contacting us by the "Contact Us" page, you must explicity provide consent to allow us to respond to you. You can revoke this consent at any time by sending us a followup message.
- The application update checker is "opt-in" and can be disabled at any time in the application preferences. Web Server logs are kept as per legitimate interest.
Legitimate Interest
- We have a legitimate interest in storing your internet address (IP) and access logs associated with this address to help detect issues and maintain the security of this website.
Public vs Personal/Private Data
The 'Contact Us' form uses e-mail. e-mail is not considered a secure medium so please refrain from sending us private information via this page.

This website and any data you provide is hosted on servers located in France. We reserve the right to change the location and country where these servers are located at any time. Servers will only be placed in countries with strong data protection and privacy laws. This page will be updated if the location of the servers changes.

The HandBrake team use GitHub for open-source project hosting.
GitHub has their own Privacy Policy Documents that apply when visiting their site.
We do not transfer any of your personal information to GitHub. If you choose to create an account with GitHub or use their services, they are the data controller and are independent of the HandBrake Team. Accounts on GitHub are not required to use HandBrake.
